LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Compton City Councilwoman Tana L. McCoy was seated Tuesday as the city’s representative on the board of directors of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
McCoy succeeds Janna Zurita, who served on Metropolitan’s 38-member board since November 2015.
“I welcome Tana McCoy to the board and I look forward to working with her,” Metropolitan Board Chairwoman Gloria Gray said.
McCoy was a 40-year city employee before retiring in 2016 to accept an appointment to represent Compton’s District 3 on the City Council. She was elected in 2017 to continue serving in the position. McCoy began her career with Compton as a junior intern when she was 17 years old. For 30 years, she was a council liaison in the Mayor and City Council offices. She then transitioned into a senior administrative analyst position for the Compton Water Department. After 10 years in that post, she retired in 2016.
For three decades, McCoy was the city’s staff representative on the Compton Commission on the Status of Women. She also volunteered on various City Hall service committees and helped coordinate health fairs and other special events and programs in the city.
As a councilwoman, McCoy represents Compton on the Compton Creek Mosquito Abatement District Board, Compton Creek Task Force Revitalization Committee, Independent Cities Association, and is the city’s alternate representative to the League of California Cities.
A mother of three and grandmother of 10, McCoy studied business at Associated Business College in Los Angeles.
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a state-established cooperative that delivers water to 26 member agencies serving 19 million people in six counties. The district imports water from the Colorado River and Northern California to supplement local supplies, and helps develop increased water conservation, recycling, storage and other resource-management programs.
