(18 NEWS) - Hospitals in rural communities across the country are closing at record rates, especially in the south. http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12487/7164010?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WETM NBC 18 Elmira i'm john kessler.. good evening.. i'm john kessler.. thank you for joining us.. hornell is breaking ground on the long- awaited, saint james mercy hospital. corning bureau chief michelle ross was at the ceremony today and she's live now from our bureau. michelle? john, many hospitals in rural communities fail trying to survive independently. for saint james mercy hospital, it found linking up with a larger medical facility was the answer to staying afloat. hospitals in rural communities across the country are closing at record rates... especially in the south. shawn hogan: "those states did not participate in the medicaid expansion, so they're still providing healthcare to the poor or the uninsured, but they're not getting paid for it." thanks to about 63 million dollars in state grants, shutting down saint james mercy hospital wasn't an option. a groundbreaking ceremony took place today at the future medical village which will host both the hospital and office building. the hospital will stand as two stories and 87- thousand square feet. mayor hogan credits governor cuomo, the legislature, and progressive policies for the positive outcome. shawn hogan: "new york state is the leader in helping their hospitals survive." the medical village will bring all the healthcare providers scattered throughout the community back together again to be in a collaborative environment. a regional concept will be implemented with hospitals in wellsville and dansville working together along with leadership from the university of rochester medical center at the forefront. one major upgrade the hospital will see... electronic health records. patient information will be accessible across all systems. jennifer sullivan: "it fosters collaboration, it fosters efficiencies. it allows the physicians to take great care of you no matter where you're located." all in all, every establishment is looking forward to the team effort... especially st james... with good reason. jennifer sullivian: "together we'll create excellent healthcare for the future as a region, great patient experience, and then we'll be able to achieve sustainability so we're here for generations to come." the office building is expected to open in 2018 and the hospital in 2019. reporting live from our corning bureau,
